They assume that the real nature and the supernatural realm interconnected between the realms of human life and the universe. Mentawai people embrace a belief system called Arat Sabulungan. Arat Sabulungan believes that there are two live in the real world and the supernatural realm; namely Ketsat (spiritual) and Sanitu (soul).

Arat Sabulungan has the customary meaning of a set of leaves. In ceremonial activities, the Mentawai people use the leaves as a fundamental tool in the ceremony.

Mentawai people trust and believe in the existence of regularity between the real world and the supernatural realm. The relationship between the both is believed in the Uma, a communal house with bird doll and monkey skull are used to summon spirit and ward off evil (Jaraik).

This is regularity and balanced in the cosmos that follow the movement of life, such as through the cycle of birth, death, old, young, and so on.

Mager is human soul and not the spirit. He is still bound to the real nature and will come out of a human body through a dream or daydream. A Sikerey will help the pririt possessed by demons and help his. The Mentawai people believe that the spirits of the natural inhabitants can be divided into two characters, the good spirits that always provide food for humans, safety and guidance.

The evil spirits like Sanitu and pitok spreading the disease and give harm to humans. The harmony between the spirit and world illustrated on side of clean and holy contained in the Uma. Mentawai people perform the activities through a balance between two worlds.
